“what is a school?
by
is a space for critical dialogue and collective learning. originally comprised of voices from columbia university’s graduate school of architecture, planning, and preservation, this project is part of an ongoing effort to redefine the parameters of our education both within and outside the institution. we invite students, academics, and practitioners to define what school is, can, and should be.
this is a shared space for research, reflection, and engagement with questions related to Palestinian and global struggles for liberation and the institutional imperialism that opposes them. this space responds to columbia university’s institutional silence on the ongoing genocide in Palestine, its repression of student and faculty support of Palestinian liberation, and its longstanding entanglement with settler colonialism.
our collective research highlights the intersections between the israeli apartheid state and coinciding domestic and imperial projects worldwide that work to maintain systems of oppression and racial domination through the convergence of shared mythologies, ideologies, strategies of domination and erasure.
throughout the duration of the show, guests and participants are invited to contribute annotations or printed matter to the context maps along the main walls of the space. additional programming includes zine making, lectures, readings, discussions, and workshops. all contributions to the show are anonymous to foster an environment free from the typical hierarchies between students, faculty, and practitioners.
